GPS External Antenna is a standalone radio frequency component specially designed to receive weak RF signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), including GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, Galileo and other satellite systems. Unlike built-in antennas, it is separated from the main device via a coaxial cable. This design overcomes the physical shielding limitations of equipment enclosures, allowing the antenna to be installed in open outdoor areas or on vehicle roofs for an optimal Field of View (FOV) of satellites.

How does it work? 

 The RF signals transmitted by GPS satellites are extremely weak when they reach the ground (typically ranging from -125 dBm to -160 dBm). High-quality GPS External Antenna ensures efficient signal capture through the following mechanism:

1. Right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) matching

The antenna features a special microstrip patch design that perfectly matches the right-hand circular polarization characteristics of satellite signals, thereby eliminating signal attenuation caused by changes in the device's orientation.

2. LNA low-noise amplifier

Built-in high-performance LNA (low-noise amplifier) that amplifies weak signals while maintaining an extremely low noise figure (typically <2 dB) and compensates for insertion loss incurred during feeder transmission.

1. Location Selection:Please be sure to install the antenna on a level surface with an unobstructed view and free of metal interference (such as the roof of a car or the top of equipment).

2. Waterproofing treatment:The outdoor connection points must be sealed using a self-melting waterproof tape applied in a "321" wrapping method to prevent rainwater from flowing along the cable into the equipment.

3. Grounding and Lightning Protection:Before the feeder cable enters the equipment room or device, it is recommended to install a feeder lightning arrester and ensure that the arrester is properly grounded nearby.

4. Wiring Specifications:When routing cables, "drip loops (U-shaped bends)" should be installed to prevent rainwater from flowing backward.

A: For automotive applications, industrial control systems, surveying and mapping projects, and outdoor applications, an active GPS External Antenna is required. Passive models are only suitable for very short indoor distances within 1 meter and may experience significant signal loss over longer cables. Q4: Can the antenna use an extended cable? What is the maximum supported length? 

A: The maximum recommended length for standard RG174 cable is 10 meters. If the cable length exceeds 10 meters, please contact the supplier to replace it with a low-loss LMR RF cable. The factory can also customize extra-long antennas with cables up to 20 meters.
